I was already a climber when I was diagnosed. My parents told me I could keep doing everything I had been doing before I was diagnosed. I was climbing in the rock gym 3 days after my diagnosis. It was really hard to climb at first because my fingers hurt so much. We finally figured out that I use my ring fingers the least when I climb, and we started testing with those fingers only.
Climbing is something we do as a family. We have climbed all over North America. My biggest accomplishment this past year was leading a 5.11b called Aquaduct Pocket in the Red River Gorge. I also climb competitively and have qualified for 4 USA Climbing Youth National Championships.
Climbing is a really important way for me to keep my blood sugar under control. I’ve had an injury recently that has limited my climbing. It is amazing how much more insulin I need to keep my blood sugar in range. In addition to climbing, I do karate. I am currently a third degree brown belt. I love the idea of Team Living Vertical because when I was diagnosed I was the only climber I knew with type 1 diabetes.
I want other people to know that type 1 diabetes doesn’t have to limit what you do. Climbing motivates me to stay on top of my diabetes. I know that I climb strongest when I haven’t had a lot of ups and downs.
